Celtic Astrology - Nathair

While investigating the stones of the Zodiac, I got more interested in Astrology; so I began to research that as well. I started with Taurus, and came across Celtic Astrology linked with the same general time periods. Since Celtic designs are fairly prominent in our art, I decided I would look in to that also and share some of what I found.

The popular Celtic Tree Astrology is based on works by Helena Patterson, who in turned used Robert Graves’ work The White Goddess. Additional research has shown Graves’ system to be greatly debated by scholars. See The Fabrication of ‘Celtic’ Astrology, if you are interested in following the debate. That being said, I am sharing this information strictly for your amusement.

Ruling God/Goddess - Cerridwen: Celtic Moon Goddess

There are 13 trees and animals associated with the lunar calendar months in Celtic Astrology. April 15- May 12 is connected with the Willow and the Adder.

White Willow
In Celtic myth the universe was hatched from two eggs hidden among the boughs of the Willow. The Willow sign is ruled by the moon, this means people born under this sign are highly creative, intuitive, and intelligent. They have a profound understanding of cycles and inherently recognize that everything has a time. This provides them with a more realistic perspective of things, and also causes them to be more patient then other tree signs. Willows have the tendency to hold themselves back, for fear of appearing flamboyant and over indulgent. It’s their powers of perception that will ultimately allow their true nature to shine, and lead them to success.
Willows join well with Birch- ‘The Achiever’ [Dec. 24- Jan. 20] and Ivy- ‘The Survivor’ [Sept.30- Oct 27].

The Druid Animal Oracle, Illustrated by Bill Worthington
In Celtic Astrology, the animal associated with this time is the Adder, whose Celtic name is nathair. Adders have exceptional memories, are very family oriented and can modify their appearance very quickly. They are extraordinarily resourceful, which is one of their greatest assets. Adders are natural and spiritual and are apt to use natural methods of healing. They are highly influenced by the moon.

Compatibility:
Adders usually have harmonious relationships with stags (Dec.24- Jan. 20) and salmon (Aug – Sept. 1). They will also relate well to seals (Feb. 18- March 17), otters (Jun. 10- July 7) and geese (Sept. 30- Oct. 27.
